History

St. Elizabeth, our patron saint, lived in Hungary during the 13th century. She was a queen who shared her gifts and helped many of the poor. She is the patroness of St. Elizabeth Community of Faith.

St. Elizabeth Church is the oldest Black Catholic parish and school in the City of Chicago. We are proud to give tribute to our founders; Rev. Augustus Tolton, Saint Katherine Drexel, SBS, Rev. Joseph Eckert, SVD and Mrs. Elsie Hodges-Sheperd.

Saint Katherine Drexel

On October 1, 2000 mother Katherine Drexel foundress of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and of St. Elizabeth-St. Monica School, was named a Saint by the Catholic Church. Our school was founded by a Saint who devoted her life and her fortune to the education of African American and Native American people.

Mother Drexel sent five SBS Sisters to start St Monica school in 1912.
